“Buddha Life” Thanka illustrates the life story of Buddha. Buddha was born Siddhartha Gautama in the palace of Lumbini, Nepal. His mother dreamt of a white elephant when he was born. He was believed to have been born from her right side while she was resting under a big tree in the garden of her palace. He spent his childhood locked inside the palace, protected from the outside world. One day he ventured outside his palace walls and encountered a beggar, a cripple, a corpse and a holy man. He saw the pain, sorrow and death for the first time. This episode deeply touched him and he felt the desire to free the world from its suffering. That night he left his sleeping wife and son and went out in the forest to seek the truth. After years of fasting, meditation and painful search, he attained Nirvana, enlightenment, under a big Bodhi tree. He spent the rest of his life teaching disciples to find a way to end suffering. At the age of eighty, he left this world and left behind him his teachings. All this is depicted in the “Buddha Life “painting. |
