“Thanka” is derived from the word “thang yig “, which in Tibetan means written record. The art of Thanka painting were believed to have started as early as the 3rd century BC.
Thankas are hand painted on cotton canvas with vegetable dyes, gold and silver. The quality and cost of a thanka depends solely on the fineness of art and the amount of gold or silver in it. The three most popular pieces of Thankas are the Wheel of life, Mandala and Buddha life.
